Keeping warm and well: staying safe in cold weather

As we head into the colder months, it’s important to keep yourself and your loved ones safe, healthy, and warm. Below are some practical tips to help you manage cold weather safely:

At Home:

  1. Heat Your Home: Keep your home warm, aiming for 18°C (65°F) in the living room and 16°C (61°F) for sleeping. If you’re struggling with heating costs, consider wearing layers and using extra blankets at night.
  2. Check Your Heating and Insulation: Ensure radiators and heaters are working well, and check that there are no drafts. If you’re struggling to heat your home, contact your energy supplier for advice.
  3. Stay Active Indoors: If you’re staying inside more often, try to move around regularly to keep warm. Simple activities like standing or walking around can help boost circulation and body temperature.

 Outdoors:

  1. Dress Warmly: Layer your clothing! Wear warm, loose-fitting clothes. Don’t forget gloves, scarves, and a hat to protect your extremities from the cold. Always wear sturdy, non-slip footwear to avoid falls on icy pavements.
  2. Stay Hydrated: Even in cold weather, your body still needs hydration. Drink warm drinks like tea, coffee, or hot water with lemon to stay hydrated while keeping warm.
  3. Take Care When Walking: The risk of slipping increases in winter. Walk slowly and carefully, especially in icy conditions, and avoid icy paths when possible.

 For Vulnerable Groups:

  1. Look Out for Others: Check on elderly friends, relatives, and neighbours to ensure they’re staying warm and well. Offer assistance if they need help with heating or getting out.
  2. Stay Warm When Outside: Limit time outdoors if possible. If you must go out, take frequent breaks inside to warm up and avoid prolonged exposure to the cold.
  3. Winter Flu Vaccine: If you’re eligible, be sure to get your flu vaccination and ensure your COVID-19 booster is up to date.

 Health Tips:

  1. Keep Moving: Exercise regularly to maintain good circulation and help your body stay warm. Even indoor activities like yoga or stretching are beneficial.
  2. Eat Well: A nutritious diet can help support your immune system during the colder months. Hot meals with plenty of vegetables, proteins, and healthy fats can help maintain energy levels.
  3. Monitor Health Conditions: Cold weather can make chronic conditions worse, such as heart disease, asthma, or arthritis. Be sure to manage your conditions carefully with the help of your GP, and don’t hesitate to seek advice if needed.

📞 Emergency Contacts:

  • In case of extreme weather, always keep a list of emergency contacts handy, such as your GP practice, NHS 111 for medical advice, or 999 in emergencies.
