The theme for World Asthma Day 2026 is:
“Access to anti-inflammatory inhalers for everyone with asthma- still an urgent need.”

Asthma is a common long-term condition affecting over 260 million people worldwide. While it can be serious, most asthma attacks and deaths are preventable with the right treatment.

Why inhalers matter

Asthma causes inflammation and narrowing of the airways, making it harder to breathe.

  • Reliever inhalers (e.g. salbutamol) help quickly ease symptoms
  • Preventer inhalers (inhaled corticosteroids) treat the underlying inflammation and help stop attacks

Most people with asthma should be using a steroid-containing inhaler to keep their condition under control. Many patients benefit from a combined inhaler that includes both a preventer and a reliever.

Why this matters

Without proper treatment, asthma attacks can:

  • Be distressing and frightening
  • Lead to hospital admission
  • In some cases, be life-threatening

What you should do

  • Take your inhalers as prescribed
  • Make sure you have a current asthma action plan
  • Check your inhaler technique regularly
  • Book an asthma review
